Black eyed peas curry, Thattai payaru kulambu

Ingredients:

  • Black eyed peas – 1/4 cup
  • Onion – 1/2
  • Tomato – 1
  • Garlic – 2 to 3 cloves
  • Green chili – 1 or 2
  • Hing – 3 to 4 pinches
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tspn
  • Masala powder or Sambar powder – 1tspn
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water

For tampering:

  • Mustard seeds and Urad dal – 1/2 tspn
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tspn
  • Curry leaves – 1 or 2 sprigs
  • Oil – 1 or 2 tspn

Recipe:

  1. Soak Black eyed peas overnight.
  2. Pressure cook all the ingredients together with enough water for 3 to 4 whistles.
  3. Open the cooker once the pressure is released.
  4. With the help of masher, mash all the ingredients till its creamy.
  5. For tampering: Heat Oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds, Urad dal and Cumin seeds. Once it starts spluttering add Curry leaves and pour this to the curry.

Goes well with: Plain rice
